If you’re entering first year at UBC Okanagan and coming directly from high school, Jump Start at UBC Okanagan is for you! This orientation will let you take care of the essentials before your first day, let you meet your UBC Okanagan professors and academic community, and help you make your first friends.
When is Jump Start?
Jump Start at UBC Okanagan runs from August 30 to September 3, 2021.
What to expect
UBC is working closely with public health authorities to determine what a safe return to campus will look like in the fall. This year, you can choose from Jump Start at UBC Okanagan’s virtual-only stream or its in-person stream.
The virtual-only stream will include both live and pre-recorded activities to accommodate for time zone differences and accessibility. Each day will include two to three hours of scheduled events, plus a number of sessions, socials, and other offerings that you can take part in at your own pace.
If you’re planning to be on or near campus in the fall, Jump Start at UBC Okanagan’s in-person stream is perfect if you plan to live in residence or commute to UBC. This stream will follow a hybrid model, providing a mix of on-campus small-group events, and virtual programming.
Whichever stream you choose, you’ll enjoy academic success workshops designed to welcome you to your program, as well as have the chance to connect with faculty members, staff, and other students who are available to help you throughout your time at UBC. You’ll find out what it’s like to learn in a university environment, and you’ll be able to take part in workshops showing you campus resources and services. During Jump Start at UBC Okanagan, you can expect a variety of large and small group socials, such as trivia nights, photo challenges, games, exercises, sports and dance tutorials, and social media contests to help you make your first friends.
Registration is now open! Visit our webpage to learn more and to complete the application form and pay your fees to sign up. Registration will close on June 30, 2021, at 12:00 pm (PDT).
What students are saying about Jump Start
“It was a great way to meet new people. I consider myself a shy person, and Jump Start made me step out of my comfort zone and experience new things which ultimately made me feel more prepared for university!”
– Ali Zaidi
“Jump Start definitely exceeded my expectations for what a virtual orientation would be like. I actually managed to make friends and connect with a few people! I had a lot of fun playing games and I was often sitting in front of my computer laughing. My leaders were also great! I felt a lot more comfortable navigating Canvas and a lot more prepared for university overall.”
– Janet Warnes
