Spring events for Indigenous students

Spring events for Indigenous students

Get ready to meet your Indigenous community at UBC! As an Indigenous student with an offer of admission, you have the chance to join us at a number of events that will welcome you to the university.

Throughout the spring, we’ve set up lots of fun activities led by our Indigenous ambassadors and UBC staff. These will let you meet your new classmates, learn more about being an Indigenous student at UBC, and discover what makes the university such a vibrant place to live, play, and study.

Destination UBC: Indigenous sessions

Destination UBC runs online over two weeks, from April 24 to May 7, 2021. The event will give you the chance to connect with your new faculty, current UBC students, and your fellow first-year classmates. Best of all, it will help you make the decision about whether UBC is the right place for you!

As well as the Destination UBC sessions available to everyone, you can also take part in social sessions open exclusively to Indigenous students. These will include beading workshops, a bannock-making session, Bob Ross paint night, and games evening. There will also the chance to take part in more active events if you’d like, including a DJ dance party and yoga class led by Indigenous instructor and activist, Shayla Stonechild.

If you choose, there are sessions that will help you find out more about the supports and services available to you as an Indigenous student. These info sessions will cover Indigenous-specific financial planning and sponsorship information, the resources available to ensure your health and wellness, and the programs and spaces designed to help you thrive at UBC.

Indigenous Tea Time

Grab your mug and tea, and join our Indigenous student ambassadors for Tea Time! These events are a casual drop-in session for newly admitted Indigenous students, hosted virtually via Zoom for one hour each week. Tea Time runs every Tuesday from April 13 to May 18 from 3:00 – 3:50 p.m. PT.

At Tea Time, you’ll meet the Indigenous students you’ll be starting school with in September. Together, you’ll spend time with some of our current Indigenous students who can answer any questions you may have about UBC.

There will be different Team Times for new UBC Okanagan and UBC Vancouver students, so you can start building your community. Each will be led by a current student at the campus you’ve been admitted to.

Each week, Tea Time will have a different theme. You can expect fun and interactive games and activities – and the chance to win prizes!
